Day Trip to Northfield

You don’t always need to hop on a plane to have an adventure. Some of the best discoveries can be found close to home or, in my case, just 40 minutes away in Northfield, MN. I spent a weekend there exploring vintage shops and indulging in local eats. Highlights of the trip included interviewing three store owners, browsing a local co-op, getting up close with a few animals, and trying dirty soda for the very first time.

I was able to talk candidly with vintage pop up store owners. Each of these three stores offer a unique shopping experience rooted in passion and creativity. Wanda’s Wool and Vintage is a haven for primitive antiques and handcrafted yarns, with treasures so distinctive they’ve been sought after by a television show. The Crabby Wren draws visitors with its nostalgic country charm, where carefully chosen items evoke childhood memories and encourage repeat visits. Meanwhile, Susie M. at The White Barn Boutique turned her dream into reality by leaving the food industry to curate a meticulously organized shop, where every item has its perfect place and her love for the business shines through. Together, these stores celebrate individuality, craftsmanship, and the joy of discovering something truly special.

Just Food Co-Op offers something for everyone. It focuses on healthy food options, is locally owned, and actively supports local producers. I was excited to spot products from Twin Cities vendors I already love, like Peace Coffee. Whether you’re shopping for everyday groceries or grabbing a prepared meal or salad, there’s plenty to choose from.

Cakewalk is all about unique desserts and creative cake offerings. I came for the cake, but I also ended up trying my first dirty soda here. It was a mix of soda, watermelon and pineapple juices, and sweet cream. It paired perfectly with the incredible carrot cheesecake cupcake I ordered. If cake isn’t your go-to, they offer cookies and plenty of other treats as well.
