Judas and the Black Messiah review and upcoming events

On the first day of Black History Month we had the pleasure of attending an advanced screening of the movie Judas and the Black Messiah as a part of the Sundance Film Festival. This is a real life depiction of the story of Fred Hampton and The Black Panther Party. This movie stars the incredible actors Daniel Kaluuya (Black Panther and Get Out) and Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out and The Photograph). Daniel stars as Fred Hampton, a Black activist and Deputy Chairman of the Black Panther Party. Lakeith portrays the FBI informant William O’Neal. The film tells the story of Fred Hampton and how the FBI paid an informant, William O’Neal, to infiltrate the Black Panther Party and take down the chairman of the Illinois chapter.

If you do not already know the story of Fred Hampton or the work that was being done by The Black Panther Party you will learn about efforts to feed and educate young children, the emergence of The Rainbow Coalition, and the effort to challenge policy brutality. You will also learn about the FBI’s COINTELPRO operation and their egregious efforts to destroy The Black Panther Party by any means.

We would rate this film 5/5. Anton states that this film is accurate and well done. He goes on to say that it is hard to watch this film as a Black man without getting angry. Constantly seeing these stories further escalates that feeling because not much has changed. This movie and history in general has taught me “Not all skin folk are your kin folk.” When an outsider is looking to bring a strong group down they often will con or pay someone that looks like you to do the dirty work. It is a part of their tactic. Knowing this does not change the fact that we are still rooting for everybody Black. Judas and the Black Messiah will be released on February 12, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max. Check it out and let us know your thoughts.
